St. Mary's Church, Fairford & Kelmscott Manor
Saturday 25th May 2024 @10.30am
From medieval stained glass to iconic artworks and objects of the Arts & Crafts movement, this day excursion into the beautiful Gloucestershire countryside - and on a lovely sunny day - really did encompass it all!
St Mary's Church is a 15th Century Church of England church in Fairford, Gloucestershire, notable for its complete set of 28 medieval stained-glass windows. Dating date back to the late 15th century and early 16th century, they are considered one of the most complete sets of medieval stained glass in Britain, and were added after the church was rebuilt by the wealthy wool merchant, John Tame (c. 1430–1500).
Initially thought to be an example of Netherlandish-style glass painting, the windows are now attributed to the Flemish glazier Barnard Flower (d. 1517).
with the overall design likely to have been influenced by Richard Fox, Bishop of Durham and later of Winchester.
We were treated to a wonderful guided tour of the church, led by an incredibly knowledgeable guide who described the images depicted on the windows, as well as setting them in fascinating historical context.
We then were free to explore the pretty market town of Fairford, and have lunch at one of the excellent eateries to be found there.
Our minibus then took us on to Kelmscott Manor and gardens, a Grade I listed limestone manor house dating from around 1570, and country home of William Morris, 'Father of the Arts & Crafts Movement'. The house was loved by Morris as a work of true
craftmanship, totally unspoilt and unaltered, and in harmony with the surrounding countryside.
We were able to view the iconic collection of artwork and objects owned and designed by Morris, and discovered why the Cotswold home became an inspiration for him and his family. The enchanting gardens were open for everyone to enjoy, as was the shop and tea rooms.
Walking around Kelmscott Manor was a truly immersive experience; a place where creativity and imagination thrive.
